A future land use permit petition filed at the Dec. 12 Cedar Park City Council meeting could be an indicator that California grocery chain Trader Joe’s is looking to expand in the Austin area.

The First Cedar Park Capital Funding filed the petition for an 8-acre site on the southwest corner of East Whitestone Blvd. and Arrow Point Drive in into the suburb northwest of Austin. The permit would rezone the plot tol allow the construction of a mixed-use retail and business center. Plans include the construction of five new buildings on the site, including a 13,500-square-foot Trader Joe’s to anchor the development in addition to office, storage, and warehouse space, totaling about 50,000 square feet.

Round Rock-based engineering company and developer Waeltz & Prete developing the project filed a letter of support for the permit.

The council took no action on the proposal, which could be presented in its January 9 agenda.

There are three Trader Joe’s in the Austin area and 15 in Texas.
