Seemingly unfazed by massive recalls and not-great Texas EV sales, Tesla continues to expand in the Austin area. The electric-vehicle company has been active at a "sizable facility" in Williamson County suburb Hutto, the Austin Business Journal reported.
The 36,000-square-foot site at 200 County Road 199 is about 30 miles north of its Tesla's gigafactory and company headquarters. While there's activity and Tesla charging stations at the site, its intended use is unclear.
Elon Musk's EV manufacturing company submitted plans in late December 2023 for interior modifications to part of an existing industrial building at the address and has since occupied it, said Hutto's director of development services
Tesla plans to spend about $1.5 million on improvements to building, formerly occupied by the JRS sign supply company, officials confirmed. Permits for whatever the company is doing on the site are pending, but construction is expected to begin in this month.
