Austin's Historic Landmark Commission signed off on the first large mixed-use project in the district planned to reform "Dirty Sixth," now rebranded "Old Sixth" — the part of East Sixth Street that has come to be characterized by shot bars and decaying buildings.
The commission gave its blessing for the redevelopment of 611 East Sixth Street into he proposed 184,000-square-foot Grant Building, which will hold hundreds of new apartments, Community Impact reported. Adjustments to the new building facade consistent with the historic block were made before the commission approved the plan.
Ryan Cos. will redevelop the existing building into a six-story, 232-unit residential complex. with feature 10,000 square feet of street-level commercial space, 14,000 square feet for amenities and leasing, and a two-level parking garage.
