A zoning change that could clear the way for a commercial development in Leander, just northwest of Austin, is in the works.
The Leander City Council Thursday gave preliminary approval for zoning changes to a 5-acre property at the of the intersection at Hero Way West and North Lakeline Boulevard. Full approval would allow for a future commercial development at the southeast corner of the intersection.
The unanimously approved the zoning change for the property from single-family suburban to general commercial, which would allow for uses including retail centers, gas stations, office space, and restaurants.
Austin developers Pohl Jensen presented the case on behalf of landowners John and Nancy Gilpin. The company’s Jennifer Jenson said the proposed project for the site includes retail, offices, restaurants, and entertainment venues. The plan includes 8,500-9,000 square feet of single-story retail and a 4,500-to-6,000-square-foot convenience store to the site. The development is expected to create about 60 jobs in the area.
The city council will hear a final reading of the request on November 21.
