With its notable dearth of water and frequent uncomfortably high temperatures,  Central Texas seems like an unlikely zone for a preponderance of surf parks. Nevertheless, at least one company has tried, and to some extent succeeded: Nland Surf Park paved the way in 2016, closing three years later and filing plans in 2019 for something called a surf ranch on the site.

Now, having secured exclusive rights to develop an Austin park, Australian surf company Aventuur is getting in the game, the Austin Business Journal reported. Aventuur plans to use wave-generating technology from Wavegarden, the Spain-based company that also supplied the tech for Nland. (The latter is still closed but now owned by the World Surfing League, according to its website.)

Aventuur, which looks to be planning parks in Perth, Australia, and Auckland, New Zealand, secured exclusive rights to Austin along with eight other markets, according to the Journal. It's been scouting for sites in the metro but doesn't have a site picked out, ABJ added.

Australian company Surf Lakes also wants to develop a surf park in Austin, ABJ reported in 2022.
