A longtime West Austin dive bar has joined western joint the Broken Spoke and the Green and White Grocery on Austin's short but mighty list of landmarked of night clubs, restaurants, and retail establishments. The City Council bestowed the status on Deep Eddy Cabaret at its Thursday meeting.
The building at 2315 Lake Austin Boulevard, just west of downtown on the Colorado River and near the historic Deep Eddy swimming pool, was the location of the Deep Eddy Grocery store in the early 1900s. The Deep Eddy Cabaret opened in 1951 and continues to do a brisk business as a self-declared dive bar. It's now joined by the Pool Burger food stand now, operated in partnership with restaurant group McGuire Moorman Hospitality.
Historic landmark designation will provide the building some level of protection from demolition as well as give the owner property tax abatements.
The city designated the Broken Spoke a landmark in 2022, and the Historic Landmark Commission has recommended Green and White Grocery, now a botánica, for historic designation,
