The Austin City Council will spend up to $107 million to buy a South Austin office campus for redevelopment as headquarters for the city’s public safety agencies. It gave the go-ahead for the expenditure at its regular meeting Thursday.

The redevelopment will consolidate the Austin Police Department, Austin Fire Department, and Emergency Medical Services headquarters under one roof. The 14-acre campus to be redeveloped is at the corner of Barton Skyway and South Mopac Expressway south of Zilker Park. It has two four-story buildings totaling 400,000 square feet and two five-level parking garages.

In addition to $107.6 million approved for the campus, the council signed off on $13 million for design and renovations — about $9 million for design work and $3 million in initial renovation.

The city will pay for the property and renovation with certificates of obligation, loans that don’t require voter approval.
