Some $33.27 million in federal funding is headed to Austin-Bergstrom International Airport. The money, which comes from the Federal Aviation Administration’s Airport Terminal Program as part of the bipartisan infrastructure law, will support the construction of the airport’s new Concourse B and a tunnel connecting it to the Barbara Jordan Terminal.
The new concourse will include at least 20 new airline gates as well as restaurants, shops, lounges, live music venues, and more passenger amenities, according to a city press release.
“The Austin airport and its workers play a critical role in our growing district. More gates and flights means cheaper fares and shorter wait times for Austinites,” said U.S. Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas). “I’m grateful for this $30 million in federal funding to create new gates, good jobs, and even better facilities at Austin-Bergstrom.”
The airport has partnered with Austin-based Page and Denver’s Fentress Architecture on the project’s design, which is in its early stages. Airport leadership looks to start significant construction of the concourse in 2027, with a projected 2030 opening.
To date, the FAA has awarded the Concourse B project $47.52 million through its competitive grant program, established by the 2021 Infrastructure Investment Act. Also known as the bipartisan infrastructure law, that act provides for a total of $1 billion for airport terminals nationwide. The city says it will continue to apply for the grants as well as using airport revenue bonds, cash on hand, and future airport revenues to pay for expansion program projects.
ABIA also recently completed the midfield taxiways and vertical steel installation on the west infill projects as well as receiving Austin City Council approval for the design and construction professional services contracts for Concourse B and the arrivals and departures hall.
