Construction on the redevelopment of a 90-year-old public housing complex in East Austin is complete.
The Housing Authority of the City of Austin has wrapped up the third and final phase of Pathways at Chalmers Court at 1700 East Third Street, and apartments are ready for move-in, according to the city.
HACA carried out the redevelopment in phases to minimize displacement of residents of the original Chalmers Courts, built in 1938 with 158 public housing residences. The new complex has 398 mixed-income units, including 300 apartments and at affordable rates and 37 that rent at market rates.
The 86 units built during the first phase of the project, opened in 2019, are all designated as affordable. The second phase produced 156 units, 87 percent of them affordable housing, and opened in 2021. The recently completed final phase resulted in 156 units 90 percent of them affordable. Affordable units start at per month $786. Market-rate units rent for $1,300 and up.
Pathways at Chalmers Court has a CommUnityCare medical and dental clinic, a dedicated Boys and Girls Clubs of Austin space, a splash pad, a basketball court, a fitness center, and a computer lab. The units have energy-efficient appliances, central air, washer/dryer hookups, and free Google Fiber wifi.
