Local nonprofit Foundation Communities broke ground this month on a multifamily community that will expand its affordable housing stock by 110 units.
Foundation Communities supports families with children, people transitioning out of homelessness, veterans, seniors, and individuals with disabilities, creating modestly priced homes with onsite supportive services.
Juniper Creek at 11630 North Lamar Boulevard will be built next door to Laurel Creek Apartments, another Foundation Communities project, and residents will have access to Laurel Creek's learning Center, open-door preschool, and food pantry. Services including a full-time case manager and kid- and pedestrian-friendly outdoor spaces will be available onsite.
Juniper Creek offer homes for Austin residents who make 60 percent of area median family income. Neighboring Laurel Creek has 88 units for families making 50 to 60 percent of the area‘s median income (approximately $44,000-53,000 for a two-person household).
Juniper Creek is expected to opens in early 2025. Austin Community Foundation and the Shield-Ayres Foundation invested $900,000 in the project, securing the five acres of property it's being built on. The city of Austin also awarded the project an amount not to exceed $6.5 million for construction; that comes from the coronavirus state and local fiscal recovery fund.
