Two years after the demolition of its storied and oldest standing Austin grocery, H-E-B opened the doors to its all-new South Austin store at the same address — 2400 South Congress Avenue.
The opening follows a complete rebuild that more than doubled the size of the original location’s most recent footprint. At over 145,000 square feet, the multi-level store includes a first-floor True Texas BBQ with indoor and outdoor dining, a second level of groceries, and three levels of above-ground parking with 500 spaces.
“After more than six decades of serving the South Congress and Oltorf communities, we are proud to offer our loyal customers a brand-new store filled with H-E-B favorites along with new amenities and features tailored to the area,” H-E-B's Cathy Harm said. “This is an iconic location, and this project reflects our commitment to preserving the heart of our long-time store while creating a meaningful space that will better serve the community for years to come.”
The H-E-B at 2400 S. Congress Avenue opened in 1957, expanding from its original 25,000 square feet to 69,000 square feet and undergoing a number of upgrades. The company demolished the former store on the site in 2002, moving it to a temporary location at the nearby Twin Oaks Shopping Center during the construction period.
