Austin-Bergstrom International Airport hit a milestone in its expansion program, completing the structural steel installation for the West Infill project. The installation is the first project in planned Barbara Jordan Terminal improvements to reach this stage of construction, according to a city press release.
The West Infill project will add add a total 75,000 square feet across four levels of the terminal, which the city says will increase capacity at TSA Checkpoint 3 by adding space for six to eight security lanes as well as for more ticketing counters and kiosks.
Steel installation marks a critical step in completing the structural framing of the West Infill and is a "key milestone along the project’s path to completion” according to the city.
Construction on the West Infill project started in April 2024 and has an expected completion date of 2026. The project will also support the second phase of the airport’s new outbound baggage handling system, increasing processing capabilities and system reliability for all checked luggage to meet growing passenger demand.
About $16 million from the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, will help fund the West Infill project. Federal grants, airport revenue, and airport revenue bonds, with no funding from local taxes, pay for the airport expansion program.
