The Austin Independent School District awarded Minneapolis-based Adolfson Peterson Construction the contract to renovate Anderson High School at 8403 Mesa Drive on the city’s northwest side.
The renovation will include updated common areas that will feature "hall of honor" and trophy cases to commemorate accomplishments of past graduates, according to a press release. The statement did not specify if the honorees will include those from the original L.C. Anderson High School in East Austin, whose 1971 closure in attempt to desegregate AISD schools left behind a great bit of memorabilia as well as “ripp[ing] the heart out of the historic black community in East Austin,” an Original L.C. Anderson Alumni Association president wrote.
Renovation of the school, which was built in 1970 and serves 2,400 students, will include a new, 43,350-square-foot competition gym with an 1,800-seat capacity, locker rooms with coaches’ offices, training rooms, officials’ dressing rooms, and laundry facilities.
AP Construction will also update common spaces, reconfigure the school’s entry vestibule and front office for security, and build a new science facility with robotics and computer labs.
PBK Architects, headquartered in Houston, is leading design of the renovation, which AISD expects to begin in May 2025 and be complete by fall 2026.
