A new noise-related city regulation will affect developers building near venues in the “Live Music Capital of the World."
The Austin City Council Thursday approved requiring new residential and hotel development projects within 600 feet of an establishment with an outdoor music venue permit or within 300 feet of a performance venue to conduct sound assessments during live performances.
The tests will measure potential noise impact on residents in proposed projects to meet a requirement that future residents be informed of possible noise or quality-of-life issues before buying or leasing. The rule will also enable developers to determine the needed levels of soundproofing for new projects.
The city will also create a mapping tool for future residents who want to learn where music-related businesses are located and to help developers determine if their projects are within boundaries of existing venues that would require the tests be conducted.
The new regulation does not impose any additional building standards or require any city staff review.
