The Markson, a new apartment complex in East Oak Hill, had is open and offering a mix of rental units to families with a range of incomes.
The Housing Authority of the City of Austin and Cleveland's NRP Group, which developed the 330-unit complex at 5313 Vega Avenue, celebrated the Markson's grand opening Tuesday, according to an NRP press release.
The site was developed to meet the neighborhood's demand for accessible "workforce housing," according to the release. More than half the units are reserved for tenants earning 80 percent of the Austin area median income.
“Here on Southwest Parkway, there’s a tremendous amount of commercial and residential space going in,” said HACA's Michael Gerber said. “That’s exciting, but so little of it is available to those who need affordable housing. That’s what we’re doing here. Be a safe place for people to call home with wonderful amenities, wonderful services, and a connectivity to the broader community.”
Apartments on the Markson's website indicate market-rate monthly rent ranging from $1,502 for a 633-square foot one-bedroom unit to two-bedroom, two-bathroom units of varying sizes starting at $2,922 per month. Starting rent for some of the units, presumably the ones designated affordable, are not listed.
Amenities include a pet spa, a fitness center, and a game room. Residents of the Markson will have access to trails, a reservoir, the Barton Creek Greenbelt, and a 20-acre nature preserve.
The complex is named for the late Dan Markson, who led significant affordable housing development efforts as an an NRP executive in Texas.
