High-end coworking comes to Eastside

Austin is no stranger to remote work — in fact, it's more gung-ho about co-working than we thought. That enthusiasm, combined with the tech-focused local economy (and likely the cash that comes with it), is what inspired a New York professional "members club," the Malin, to open its first upscale coworking space in Austin—more specifically, East Austin.

The company chose the Eastside location with particular intent. A Malin press release says that it "seek[s] out the most exciting, developing neighborhoods across the country" in which to set up shop. "Thriving young neighborhood" East Cesar Chavez fills the bill, offering proximity to Austin's vaunted creative culture in local galleries and studios as well as its restaurant and bar scene.

Expected to open this summer, the Malin East Austin is already underway at 1515 East Cesar Chavez Street. The 12,000-square-foot building will have 28 dedicated desks, 13 phone booths, 10 private offices, four meeting rooms, and a library. It's a highly local affair, indeed; the architect of record for the building and its interiors is Urban Foundry (One Oak, The Eberly), and Chioco (Paperboy, Torchy's) is the design architect.

Memberships purchased before the Malin East Austin opens will start at $275 per month for access and $580 per month for a dedicated desk, with prices lasting the length of the membership. Access memberships will be $395 per month, and a dedicated desk will be $725 per month after the building opens.

The Malin's New York locations —in Soho, Williamsburg, and the West Village — are consistent with the brand's focus on urban neighborhoods with a certain panache, as well as to what looks like nicely executed, high-end, comfortable but highly functional and business-oriented interiors. The Malin East Austin will be a continuation of the company's expansion beyond New York, which started with two locations in Nashville.
