After a sometimes heated battle with the city, a longtime local skateboard shop has vacated its storefront at 812 West 12th Street. The move would facilitate a proposal to demolish the building that housed No-Comply Skate Shop for 15 years to make way for an Austin Community College parking garage.
Outrage over the demo of the 1946 building on the ACC-owned lot arose briefly when project proposal was made public, but No-Comply successfully negotiated a relocation to a 824A West 12th Street, a nearby garage also owned by the community college.
The city Historic Landmark Commission signed off on the demolition permit for the former skate shop space at its October 4 meeting.
The building was home to a number of small businesses throughout the mid-20th century, including a beauty salon, a paint and wallpaper store, and an ice cream parlor.
The past decade has seen Austin Community College break ground on a number of large-scale investments, including the $49 million renovation of its historic Rio Grande Campus building and the rapid expansion of facilities at the former Highland Mall. Last November, voters approved an additional $770 million bond for workforce training programs and facility enhancements laid out in the college’s districtwide campus master plan.
